EDF price rises 'mean cheap energy is over'
A recent increase in the prices of energy from utilities supplier EDF Energy means that days of cheap gas and electricity are over, uSwitch has claimed.
The price comparison site notes that gas bills are rising by 22 per cent and electricity is increasing by 17 per cent. It adds that it is now likely that other energy providers will also increase their prices following the move by EDF.
Director of consumer policy at uSwitch Ann Robinson said: "The days of cheap energy are over - today's move means we are another step closer to seeing the largest ever increase in household energy bills in one year."
She added that if estimates provided by industry experts are correct, then spending on energy will reach five per cent of average household income.
Earlier this month, uSwitch noted that if gas prices do rise by 60 per cent, some 2.4 million people could fall into fuel poverty.
