eBay targets online fraud
Consumers using debit and credit cards to shop on online auction site eBay are to be afforded greater protection from fraud, it has been announced.
An agreement between the site, online payment company PayPal and Google will see DomainKeys Identified Mail applications employed to guard against fraudulent emails and phishing attacks.
The software works by preventing the delivery of fraudulent eBay and PayPal messages by scanning them for suspicious content.
The protection will however only be available to shoppers with Gmail accounts.
Garreth Griffith, head of risk management at PayPal UK said: "The Gmail team's decision to work with eBay and PayPal on this issue is a significant step forward in our fight to keep consumers safe from phishing and cybercrime.
"Today's announcement will enhance online safety for millions of eBay and PayPal customers who use Gmail."
Banking industry data shows card losses from phone, internet or mail order crime totalled £290.5 million in 2007.
