Drivers risking lives after long haul flights
Millions of Britons are risking serious injury or death when driving home after long haul flights, a car insurance company has warned.
According to over-50s insurance specialist Saga, 3.2 million people admit to driving after taking a lengthy flight when they are likely to be tired.
Meanwhile a further 1.3 million confessed they usually drink on long haul flights and still drive home when they land, despite the fact that alcohol makes people feel more fatigued.
Andrew Goodsell, chief executive of the insurer, commented: "This research reveals a worrying picture. A lack of sleep or drinking onboard can mean that drivers are not fully alert for the journey home.
"We recommend anyone driving after flying plans their journey to include time for adequate rest, or take a taxi or public transport to get home if they know they are likely to feel tired."
Saga's research also found that one in ten people drive themselves home after a long haul flight.
