Car insurance fraudsters 'now more likely to be caught'
Motorists committing car insurance fraud are increasingly likely to get caught, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has claimed.
The ABI issued the warning to dishonest drivers after new figures showed that last year insurers uncovered 24,000 fraudulent claims worth a total of £260 million.
This contributed to a 70 per cent rise in detection of the claims over the last three years.
Nick Starling, director of general insurance and health at the organisation, said: "Insurance fraud is no victimless crime. Honest motorists pay through higher insurance premiums - an extra £40 a year on average. This is why insurers are ramping up their crackdown to weed out the cheats.
"Anyone committing insurance fraud is more likely to get caught, risks a criminal record, and will find future insurance and credit harder to obtain and more expensive."
The improvement in the accuracy of assessing claims can be attributed to more comprehensive data sharing systems used by insurers as well as voice stress analysis software.
