Brits shocked by £1,000 energy bills
Thousands of Britons with estimated energy bills have been surprised by huge debts, it has been revealed.
According to Citizens Advice, the cases, which have seen some families presented with bills of up to £1,000, have arisen due to a combination of estimated bills and higher energy costs.
This has resulted in people being unaware of how much energy they are using and potentially racking up large debts before they are presented with their bills.
Tony Herbert, a senior policy officer with Citizens Advice, told BBC Online: "Families can rack up huge fuel bills without even realising it because the amount they're paying is actually based on estimated readings.
He added: "They might have a direct debit set up; they might think they're paying their bill.
"But because they're paying on estimated readings it may not reflect how much they're actually using."
Since the start of the year the average gas and electricity bill has risen by around 15 per cent, with further hikes expected before the end of the year.
