British Gas announces price hike
British Gas has hiked its energy tariffs for the second time this year, it has been announced.
The energy giant has increased prices for gas and electricity by 35 per cent and nine per cent respectively.
This will affect 16 million Britons, and will bring the average dual fuel bill for a British Gas customer up by £404 to £1,347.
The announcement follows an increase from rival provider EDF Energy last week, which saw gas bills up by 22 per cent and electricity rise by 17 per cent.
Sean Gardner, director of MoneyExpert.com, said the round of increases is set to fuel a huge rise in the number of Britons looking to switch provider in search of a cheaper deal.
He added: "These price hikes aren't unexpected. But they're still enormous and will still hit consumers hard.
"Our research shows that around three million people switch their gas bills every six months - that figure could go through the roof as consumers try to get the cheapest tariffs before the cold weather returns."
