£800 bank charges for going overdrawn by 8p
A 20-year-old student has been stung with bank charges of £800 after going overdrawn by just 8p.
The charges were initially imposed after Laura Gibson bought a top for £60 in September last year, pushing her 8p into the red.
This resulted in an immediate charge of £65, followed by a further £30 the next month when she did not clear the overdraft and subsequent penalties of £60 and £30.
The amount owed then spiralled after her account provider Lloyds TSB hiked overdraft charges to £20 per day.
Ms Gibson, who has paid back £300 so far, claims that the stress that the bank has caused her drove her to a nervous breakdown.
Ms Gibson said: "This whole episode has been an absolute nightmare. I've now paid more than £300 in charges but still they want more.
"I've stopped using the account and the way I've been treated is disgraceful."
She added: "I'm working part-time to try to make ends meet and there's no way I can afford to hand over that amount of money for such a ridiculous debt."
