Watchdog slams energy companies
Complaint handling standards in the energy sector are unacceptably low, according to the UK's energy market watchdog.
Research from energywatch shows that the average consumer will typically contact their provider seven times over seven months to attempt to resolve even minor problems, such as an inaccurate bill.
However, having eventually secured pledges from their provider that they will resolve the problem, 97 per cent of customers surveyed said that even after this timeframe their supplier had failed to take the action they promised.
Allan Asher, chief executive of energywatch, said the findings were indicative of the low priority the consumer is given by their suppliers.
He commented: "Energy companies are their own worst enemies. By not listening to consumers, not returning their calls, not updating accounts and many other examples that are signals of poor customer service, they give consumers no reason to stay.
"Worse still, they allow simple problems to turn into seven month sagas of broken promises and poor customer service."
