Uninsured driver numbers 'falling'
Motorists who have had the misfortune to experience a road accident with an uninsured driver will welcome the latest news from the British Insurance Brokers Association (Biba).
The organisation states that changes in the way authorities are able to address uninsured drivers have reduced the number of such road users by more than ten per cent.
Alterations include police powers to seize uninsured vehicles as well as to have access to the motor insurance database.
Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive for Biba, said: "In 2007, approximately 150,000 were seized by the police and in 2006 this number was 78,000.
"So it's practically doubled in the last year and we're expecting it to be much higher again this year."
The fall in the number of uninsured drivers could be instrumental in bringing down the costs of premiums for other drivers, providing valuable help with finance to the country's motorists.
However, according to the Motor Insurers' Bureau, 23,000 people a year are injured in accidents involving uninsured drivers.
