Uninsured cars 'used in fight against crime'
Police are using the motor insurance database to help prevent and solve other crimes, it has been suggested.
Graeme Trudgill of the British Insurance Brokers' Association said that police have many tools that can be used to track down those driving without this personal finance product.
Apart from being able to access the motor insurance database, police also use automatic number plate reading cameras that alert them to uninsured vehicles.
"It makes their job easier," said Mr Trudgill, adding that these tools also help police in solving other crimes.
"Usually criminals use a vehicle to aid in their criminal activity and it's quite likely that, being the type of people that they are, they don't bother to buy insurance," he added.
The Motor Insurers' Bureau notes that law-abiding citizens typically have to shell out some £30 a year extra on their insurance premium as a result of other uninsured drivers.
