Understanding money 'could keep Scottish kids out of debt'
Part of the curriculum for schools in Scotland is to focus on helping children gain a greater understanding of money that could enable them to avoid trouble with debt in later life, it has been revealed.
The Scottish government is keen to ensure that young people around the country are equipped to handle their own personal finance issues when they reach adulthood and become fully-fledged consumers.
As part of a newly-introduced 'curriculum for excellence', schoolteachers in Scotland will aim to help their pupils gain good numeracy skills and an ability to avoid trouble with debt in future.
"Many adults today are having to deal with financial problems - even simply from the excesses of the festive period - and by ensuring all children receive these core messages at school, we want to equip them with the ability to avoid these pitfalls in their financial future," explained minister for schools and skills Maureen Watt.
The ifs School of Finance recently called for teachers throughout the UK to be trained in how to teach their pupils personal finance skills.
