Teachers 'need training' on personal finance education
Teachers should be trained in how to educate British school children on issues relating to personal finance, it has been claimed.
The ifs School of Finance is convinced that a personal finance aspect should be introduced into all teacher training courses and that such a step would be beneficial for both educators and pupils.
Citing recent research from the Association of Investment Companies (AIC), the organisation insists that a full 90 per cent of teachers and parents in the UK would welcome the extension of personal finance education in schools around the country.
"The fact that the AIC research suggests almost 75 per cent of teachers would be happy to teach personal finance if it were a statutory course and proper teacher training was provided, again highlights the need for both," said Anne Kiem, director of external affairs at the ifs School of Finance.
Prime minister Gordon Brown recently stressed that he would like to see personal finance lessons become more commonplace in British schools and colleges.
