Stocks and retail are 'bad news' markets, says F & C
2008 will be a bad year for the stock and retail markets, according to investment house F & C Asset Management.
A spokesperson for the company said that he expected to see a further marking down of publicly traded companies, after witnessing a devaluing of many British banks.
He also predicted that the retail market would be hit by the tightening of consumer credit markets, meaning a lowered level of spending - news that may be of interest to those seeking help with money through investment in such markets.
"We think that with slowing consumers, we will see more bad news," said Jason Hollands, head of group communications at F&C Asset Management.
He expressed particular concern for the retail market as it is more exposed to changes in the credit markets. He advised that blue chip companies should fare best in tough economic conditions.
The concern for the consumer market follows a recent report from the Post Office showing a rise in a consumer overspend in the Christmas period.
A Norwich Union surveys also reports many people will experience trouble with debt in the coming months.
Some 75 per cent of interviewees expected to run out of money in early January, with half saying they will use credit and personal loans to cover the cost.
