Removing walls can invalidate insurance, warns provider
The vogue for open plan living could be leading millions of homeowners to invalidate their home insurance policies, it has been claimed.
According to new data from Halifax Home Insurance, the practice of knocking down walls to give a home a more open plan layout has resulted in the loss of 2.9 million rooms.
Moreover, with the trend showing no sign of abating, a further 2.1 million rooms are set to go this year, too.
Of these, 25 per cent plan to remove the walls themselves in a bid to save on the cost, the study showed.
However, homeowners should be warned that attempting to carry out the work themselves instead of enlisting a professional should think again or risk invalidating their home insurance, David Rochester, head of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance, said.
He explained: "Not only do we urge homeowners to make sure a qualified person carries out any structural work to their home, we also recommend seeking the advice of a qualified structural engineer before progressing work to knock down any walls.
"Any damage to a weight-bearing wall that results in ceiling collapse or other damage could also invalidate a buildings insurance policy."
