Record profits 'should anger British Gas customers'
News that British Gas is increasing its dual fuel tariff by 15 per cent should have customers asking questions, an expert says.
The energy giant announced that it was upping prices with immediate effect on Friday, January 18th.
And while the company has also announced record half-year profits of £533 million, this is an under-estimate, according to Citigroup, finance comparisons website uSwitch.com reported.
The consumer website said this would add an extra £139 a year on to the average dual fuel customer's household energy bill, with more than 16 million customers affected.
Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, said: "Last year, British Gas spent £53 million on advertising, convincing consumers that it had turned over a new leaf.
"Now it is getting back to what it does best - shoddy service, high prices and poor value for money."
She suggested customers should look around for a more competitive deal.
Energy company nPower was the first to increase its tariffs this year, announcing a 17.2 per cent hike on gas and 12.7 per cent on electricity.
Rising energy prices are of widespread concern as they can lead to trouble with debt.
