People "nervous" about trouble with debt
British consumers have become "very nervous" about their trouble with debt in light of the problems facing the UK economy, it has been claimed.
Vince Cable, treasury spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats, has described the economy as being "extremely vulnerable" and maintained that the situation has had an impact on many people's personal finance problems.
Millions of Britons have borrowed large sums in an effort to get a foot on the UK's property ladder, but Mr Cable has suggested that house prices have been rising in a "bubble" that is "starting to break".
"I think the British economy is extremely vulnerable. It is extremely vulnerable partly because the government has very little freedom of manoeuvre," he told BBC Two's Newsnight programme.
"We have this mountain of personal household debt which people are becoming very nervous about," he added.
A report from MoneyExpert earlier this week suggested that trouble with debt has seen almost half a million people around the UK miss a mortgage repayment deadline since July of last year
