Over 80s are UK's best-off retirees
Britain's best-off retirees are those in their 80s who worked until standard retirement age and who are now living off company pensions, a study has revealed.
This demographic were identified as the best off pensioners in the country in a poll conducted by Saga.
The company based its assertion on the fact that less than one in five of retirees in their 80s said they had been unable to afford most things through their retirement.
This compares with the 30 per cent of those early retirees in their 50s who said they had struggled for money.
Meanwhile, 80 per cent of respondents in their 80s said they are at least as well or better off in retirement as they had anticipated.
Conversely, just 15 per cent of those in their 50s said they were better off than they expected with 49 per cent saying they are as well off as they had expected to be.
Commenting on the findings, Andrew Goodsell, chief executive of Saga, said that consumers seeking a similarly comfortable retirement should follow the example of the retirees in their 80s.
He said: "The experiences of people already enjoying life without work should act as an example to those who want to ensure an active and affluent retirement.
"It is not too late for people nearing, or those who have recently stopped working to make a few sound choices to ensure they can live that ‘retirement dream’."
