NIA: Practical beats behavioural in terms of energy saving
People looking for help with money through increased home energy efficiency are better off changing their insulation than their behaviour, it has been claimed.
The National Insulation Association (NIA) states that investing in cavity wall insulation or other physical improvements to the home will "outlive" energy-efficient habits such as turning down the thermostat by one degree.
Neil Marshall, chief executive of the NIA, adds that the media tends to focus on habit-based energy-saving tips, meaning that practical, physical changes are often overlooked.
"Practical measures like insulation, once installed, last forever. Plus, with ever increasing living expenses it is more cost effective than ever to insulate your home in order to reduce energy bills," he asserts.
According to the NIA, savings of around £90 a year can be made by the average home simply by investing in cavity wall insulation.
Meanwhile, research conducted by the Energy Saving Trust suggests that between 2002 and 2005, 800,000 homes opted to install such insulation.
