New rules for IVAs
Providers of individual voluntary arrangements (IVAs) will be following new industry guidelines from Friday.
The framework establishes rules for advertising, advice and documentation for people who can no longer afford to repay their debts.
It follows meetings between the Insolvency Service, which represented creditors, consumers and providers of advice and insolvency services, and the British Bankers' Association (BBA).
"People in debt and their creditors need to know that when an IVA is proposed it is the most appropriate solution," said BBA chief executive Angela Knight.
"The BBA, the Insolvency Service and the participating IVA providers are united in support for this agreement, which should provide customers with the reassurances they need in order to make the right choice for their financial futures."
With Britain's combined personal debt levels having reached more than £1.3 trillion more people are likely to need debt advice in the coming months.
The credit crunch has made the lending environment more hostile and with the economy expected to slow, financial problems could become more widespread.
