Nationwide: Savings code of conduct call
Nationwide is calling for a voluntary code of conduct for the savings industry to protect consumers against misleading introductory rate offers.
The building society claims some providers lure customers in with high rates of interest but fail to inform them when these rates fall after a certain period of time.
It believes a voluntary code whereby providers would be required to make clear to savers when they open an account exactly when the rate they receive is due to change is needed.
Matthew Cater, director for savings at Nationwide, said that as introductory deals become more commonplace it is more difficult for savers to make the best decisions about their personal finance.
"Consumers are told when their mortgage deals are due to change and it shouldn't be any different for savers," he stressed.
Attractive interest rates may have encouraged more people to put money away as research from Alliance & Leicester shows that Britons' savings have almost doubled since 2000 and could reach a total of £1 trillion by 2012 if current growth continues.
