Investors 'should wait and gauge unstable markets'
Those wishing to invest in unstable countries should "wait and watch" before committing, according to a leading property investment company.
Observations from personal finance advisor Investors Provident follow instances of unrest in Kenya, which has seen stable levels of investment in the past. However, the two weeks of violence following national elections are threatening the country's economy.
There has been an 80 per cent drop in tourism, according to a special report by the Guardian.
In reference to Kenya, Investors Provident director Hetal Shah said that confidence "had been dented to a great degree", but added that the risk is likely to subside.
"Although there is no hard and fast rule", he added, potential investors in countries experiencing turmoil "have to wait and gauge the market".
Those seeking help with money through investment in such countries should not be scared off automatically, he said, but warned that it was important to see how any past problems were resolved.
"Look to see if there has been similar events in the past - and if so, what was the outcome?"
Tourists are being advised by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to only travel to Kenya if it is absolutely necessary.
