Holiday season 'sees increased fraud risk'
The winter season can see a sharp rise in ID Fraud due to the relaxed attitude that accompanies the festive period, it is claimed.
Equifax states that Christmas and its aftermath present a variety of opportunities for fraudsters to gain help with money from other people's personal finance products.
Furthermore, the firm asserts that a general increase in such activity has occurred in recent years, potentially resulting in trouble with debt for the unwary consumer.
Neil Munroe, external affairs director, said: "We have more fraudsters at work now ... there has been a concerted effort into ID fraud by criminal gangs who use it to raise funds for their other activities."
Meanwhile, research firm Cifas has released data suggesting that the crime is most commonly experienced within the M25 area.
And recent Home Office figures indicate that in 2006 the cost of ID theft reached as much as £1.7 billion.
