High costs 'making gap years impossible'
The high costs of getting on to the housing ladder has made it financially impossible for thousands of British students to take a gap year, according to the latest money news from Abbey.
An increasing number of students around the country are now opting to save for a housing deposit rather than to cover travel expenses during a gap year, the personal finance firm reports.
In fact, there are now thought to be almost six-times more British students thinking about how they will finance their first property purchase than has typically been the case during the past ten years.
"House prices have brought in a harsh new reality for students," said Nici Audhlam-Gardiner, hea dof mortgages at Abbey.
"They now need to weigh up the benefits of travelling against jumping straight into a career and being able to afford to get onto the property ladder."
Last year, personal finance comparison firm Moneysupermarket.com urged anyone planning to travel during a gap year to ensure that they have adequate insurance cover.
