Halifax: Migration to south-east identified
Millions of Britons have migrated to the south east of England from elsewhere in the UK over the last decade, new figures show.
According to Halifax some 2.5 million people moved to the region from other UK areas between 1996 and 2006, making it the most popular region for people to relocate to.
However, the bank also found that during the same period around 2.4 million people left the capital to live in other regions across the country.
Despite this, London saw the biggest increase in population of anywhere else in the UK thanks to the arrival of one million people from abroad.
The figures show that in the ten years to 2006, London's population rose by 538,000, an increase which has led to a substantial swell in house prices.
Land Registry data shows that prices in London rose by 1.1 per cent in November compared to an average of 0.6 per cent across the rest of the UK.
Such large increases have caused many struggling homebuyers to seek help with loans and personal finance in a bid to achieve their purchasing ambitions.
