Halifax: Empty homes action has public backing
Two thirds of people think that the government should do more to tackle the problems of empty homes, Halifax research suggests.
Vacant properties have a negative impact on communities and one in four respondents said they lived on a street that had an empty home.
Residents complained that these buildings reduced local property prices and affected their enjoyment of their street.
They also said that empty properties put potential buyers off moving into the area.
Jaedon Green, head of mortgage sales at Halifax, said: "Halifax calls on the government to extend existing VAT and council tax discounts to encourage the renovation of empty houses, thus making them homes."
Halifax originally broke this finance news during December's Empty Homes National Week of Action.
It pointed out that in those local authorities with high proportions of empty homes, house prices were 17 per cent lower than other areas.
Halifax also suggested its research had shown that, on the whole, areas with the most empty homes also suffered high levels of deprivation.
Often areas of deprivation can be linked to trouble with debt.
