Energy price hikes 'avoidable'
Increases in energy prices instigated by utilities firms are neither necessary nor fair, according to an independent industry watchdog.
Suppliers are electing to increase prices without due cause, energywatch suggests.
It is advising those hoping to gain help with money through lower utility bills to wait and see which companies plan to undertake price hikes in the coming days and weeks to avoid settling on a poor tariff.
A spokesperson for the watchdog said: "It's easy for most consumers to switch.
"Consumers should use one of the switching sites accredited by the energywatch Confidence Code."
She added that the number of people in fuel poverty, needing help with finance to heat their homes, was set to grow this year.
They will swell the numbers of the four million already in a similar situation, energywatch claims.
Such money news follows a recent statement from npower informing their customers that costs were set to rise, with the average homeowner seeing 12.7 and 17.2 per cent hikes in electricity and gas respectively
