Energy companies 'should offer social tariffs'
Calls have been made for utilities companies to offer low-cost "social tariffs" providing help with money to vulnerable people.
The National Consumer Council (NCC) and National Energy Action are coordinating their call for energy firms to establish the tariffs, which they add should be well publicised to make consumers aware of the options open to them.
Such a tariff could be made available to low-income families and elderly people, the organisations argue.
NCC acting chief executive Philip Cullum says: "There needs to be a more consistent and effective set of social tariffs, making sure that vulnerable people are shielded from the worst effects of rising energy prices.
"Energy companies should take responsibility for this."
However, he adds that this week's energy bill would provide the opportunity for the government to require such help with finance if the energy firms were unwilling to take such initiatives.
The finance news comes in the wake of a number of prices increases from energy firms set to present more personal finance difficulties for households across the UK.
