Darling confident about underlying strength of UK economy
Chancellor Alistair Darling has claimed that he is confident about the underlying strength of the UK economy, despite worsening financial conditions in the wake of the so-called credit crunch.
Millions of British consumers are facing trouble with debt, but Mr Darling has made clear his opinion that if "we stick to course we have set" then the national economic outlook will improve.
Interest and mortgage rates are at "historically low" levels, according to the chancellor, who asserted that there are a range of economic indicators that can be considered "extremely encouraging".
"What gives me encouragement is that the British economy is in a much, much stronger position today than when we had these difficulties in the past," he told BBC Two's Newsnight programme.
"When I talked to my counterparts in different parts of the world, of course in America you can see the effects of what is happening there, but in Europe, in India and China, there is strong growth."
Last year, a report from accountancy firm Grant Thornton revealed that the outstanding amount of consumer debt in the UK is greater than the country's annual gross domestic product.
