Cookery capers 'put kitchens at risk'
Amateur cooks are causing devastation in the kitchen and starting fires, an insurance company says.
Halifax Home Insurance suggested the popularity of celebrity chef programmes could be contributing to fires in the kitchen, which cost homeowners and the industry £280 million a year.
More than 84 kitchen fires a day - in excess of 30,000 a year - are started by carelessness.
Scottish cooks are the most vulnerable to fire-related incidents and many are caused by misuse of kitchen appliances.
The top three English locations on a UK-wide list of households with the highest ratio of kitchen fires per house were all in the north of the country - Blackburn (sixth), Preston (eighth) and Chester (tenth).
Halifax head of underwriting, David Rochester, said: "It's great to see TV stars getting the nation excited about cooking, but we are urging people who do take it up as a hobby to take extra care in the kitchen."
A recent survey by Legal & General, entitled Changing Face of British Homes, found that a fifth of respondents had a television in their kitchens.
