Youngsters urged to start saving for retirement
Millions of young people will face severe disappointment unless they begin saving for their retirement now, a study suggests.
A poll of 2,000 teenagers found that very few expect to give up the luxuries they now enjoy during later life, despite the fact that less than half of these have committed any of their earnings to savings, a You Gov study showed.
As a result they are likely to find themselves living in significantly reduced circumstances in later life, without the foreign holidays and gym memberships to which they have become accustomed, Paul Banfield of Best Advice Financial Planning cautioned.
He said: "It's great that young people want more and the message to them is simple - you can take steps today to set yourself up for the kind of life you want tomorrow.
"If you don't wake up to this opportunity and simply cruise towards retirement with your eyes closed, you may have a rude awakening."
Scottish youngsters were identified as those most likely to believe they will be able to afford their current lifestyles, with 84 per cent expecting that the treats they enjoy now will be affordable in later life.
