Total bill for roof damage hit £45bn last year
Damage to roofs caused during last summer’s storms left homeowners facing a collective bill of £4.5 billion last year, it has been revealed.
Halifax Home Insurance estimates that some 1.5 million people sustained some form of damage to their roofs as a result of the high winds and heavy rain.
The average individual bill for damage to a property stood at £2,800.
Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "The damage caused by high winds runs into billions of pounds each year.
"Immediate action is vital if householders are to avoid seeing the problem exacerbated by water coming in through missing or broken tiles."
He added: "It's advisable for homeowners to conduct a thorough inspection from ground level following high winds and call in a professional if they are concerned there may be damage."
The study also revealed that as a result of the storms some 127 tiles were blown off each roof, or 200 million tiles in total.
