Till debt do we part
People who have split from a partner who was facing heavy debts should act now to make sure they are disassociated from their financial woes, a consumer credit company has warned.
It is a truth universally acknowledged that there are few things in life quite as upsetting as the end of a long-term relationship.
However, according Owen Roberts of Callcredit Consumer, just as "traumatic" as love pangs is being financially linked to an ex-partner who was saddled with debts.
This is the case because, should you fail to disassociate yourself from them at the outset, you could be held responsible for their debts for years after you’ve moved on romantically, according to Mr Roberts.
He warned: "Unless you want to end up being liable for your ex-partners debts, separating yourself financially by putting a notice of disassociation on your credit file for example, is essential and straightforward.
"If you fail to do this, whatever your ex-partner does can worryingly affect your credit file for the next six years."
