Surveyors reported falling prices during January
The number of UK surveyors noting a drop in house prices continued to rise in January, a survey from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) has revealed.
Figures from Rics show that a total of 54.7 per cent more surveyors noted a drop in house prices rather a rise during the period.
This compares with 49.1 per cent in December and is the sixth month in a row in which the balance has widened.
It is also the highest balance recorded since the last significant slowdown in November 1992 when it stood at 60.1 per cent.
Rics spokesman Jeremy Leaf attributed the slowing market to stalling demand and battered confidence among consumers.
However, Mr Leaf remained hopeful that this will be arrested once lenders pass on the benefit of last week’s cut to the base rate of interest to their customers.
He said: "Agents are finding it difficult to market properties to an audience which has decided to watch the current economic theatre from the wings.
"If mortgage lenders filter the recent interest rate cuts into the market, demand should begin to increase."
