Property still attracting investors
Property was still attracting investors in the second half of last year, despite the impact of the credit crunch.
The global financial markets were plunged into crisis during the final months of 2007 after the US sub-prime mortgage market collapsed.
But despite a more hostile lending environment, buy-to-let investors continued to borrow.
Figures from the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) revealed that loan applications, including remortgages, increased to 179,000 in the second half of last year, up from 171,000 on the first six months.
"Tenant demand for private rented property remains strong and buy-to-let is fulfilling an important role in helping to deliver an increased flow of high quality homes to rent," said Michael Coogan, CML director general.
"Buy-to-let has remained resilient in the face of the funding constraints that have affected the sector and the wider mortgage market."
Investors may be hoping to take advantage of the slowdown in the property market and pick up some bargains to add to their portfolio.
If they have money to put down, they will remain more appealing to lenders and will therefore enjoy more competitive borrowing rates.
