'Poorer Britons disadvantaged by lack of cash payment options'
Poorer consumers are being denied access to a number of services by companies' failure to allow them to pay in cash.
Data cited by the Post Office reveals that 2.8 million Britons do not have either a bank or building society account and rely on being able to pay their household bills in cash.
However, according to the mail service "many companies offering…electricity, telephone, broadband and digital TV" fail to provide a cash payment option.
This is leaving a host of services and potentially cheaper tariffs out of the reach of millions Britons, many of whom are likely to already be financially disadvantaged, it is claimed.
Gary Hockey-Morley, marketing director at the Post Office, said: "Businesses need to ensure their services are accessible to as many people as possible.
"This includes not only the financially excluded who operate solely on a cash budget, but those who actually prefer to pay in cash over direct debit for greater budgeting control."
News of Mr Hockey-Morley's comments come as more and more energy providers have introduced discounts for clients who opt for paperless billing - a service which is unavailable to consumers who do not hold a debit or credit card.
