Parental taxi trips touch £3k
Parents across the land are being dubbed the national taxi service as a result of the thousands of hours and pounds that go into ferrying children around.
New research from AA Insurance has revealed how mums and dads are covering more than 1,600 miles every year as a free taxi service taking their children to school, sports events and social meetings.
Typically the insurer says they could be adding almost £3,000 per year to their annual salary if they were to charge for the service as a chauffeur.
AA Insurance director Simon Douglas said that it was important that parents took proper precautions from an insurance point of view with the journeys that they typically make.
"Even for a five-minute journey it's vital to make sure children are properly belted up and safe and don't be tempted to put more youngsters in the car than there are seats. It may be a short trip but there are no short cuts when it comes to safety."
He added: "Most parents accept that 'chauffeur' is part of their parental job description, along with 'chef', 'cleaner', 'counsellor' and many more but our research proves they really go that extra mile to ensure their children can get around.
"With the car at the centre of family life it is essential that parents make sure they are properly protecting their most precious cargo."
With news that parents are also increasingly being forced to foot the bill for their offspring's first foray into the property market, it seems that being a parent has never been such an expensive experience.
