Mortgage lenders urged to help struggling clients
Mortgage lenders are failing to do enough to help struggling homeowners at risk of repossession, it has been claimed.
Sue Edwards, head of consumer policy at Citizens Advice, called for a more sympathetic approach from lenders in the wake of figures from the Council of Mortgage Lenders showing that repossessions rose by 21 per cent last year.
According to Ms Edwards, the increase is due in part to lenders unwillingness to negotiate with customers.
She said: "Our evidence shows that lenders are not always doing everything they can to help borrowers in trouble, all too often piling on extra charges and being too quick to take court action rather than being prepared to negotiate affordable repayment arrangements.
"We want to see all lenders being reasonable when dealing with customers who do get into trouble, and taking court action for possession only as a last resort."
The 27,100 homes repossessed during 2007 represents the highest figure for eight years.
