Home insurer advises on long holidays
The AA has advised householders planning a long trip away from home to always check up on their insurance before they travel.
The insurer said homeowners should check their home contents insurance policy to make sure they have cover for the length of time that leaving their property unattended.
Consumers were warned by the home insurance provider that this time period varies widely from insurer to insurer.
Ian Crowder, public relations manager for the AA, said: "If you are away for a long time - typically over 30 consecutive days - your insurer may want special terms imposed, such as guarantees that the house is being regularly inspected.
"Or they may impose an additional premium or reduce level of cover, or even not cover at all."
Recent research from Liverpool Victoria has revealed over two-thirds (68 per cent) of householders were found to have left high-value items on clear display to passers-by.
According to statistics, theft accounts for around 36 per cent of total UK crime.
