Energy probe branded a 'waste of money'
Taxpayers’ money would be better spent on promoting the benefits of switching energy provider than investigating the companies involved, it has been claimed.
Last week it was announced that the Commons Select Committee is to launch an investigation into the latest round of double digit increases from UK energy providers.
The probe follows announcements of rises averaging 15 per cent on electricity and gas from British Gas, npower, EDF and Scottish Power.
However, while the investigation has been welcomed by consumer groups, Scott Byrom, utilities manager at price comparison site moneysupermarket.com, said the outlay for the investigation would be better spent on raising awareness of the cheaper deals available for consumers who change to a more appropriate tariff.
He said: "Over half of the UK population is oblivious to the huge savings out there, so politicians should act, rather than blowing more hot air into the atmosphere."
Mr Byrom added: "63 per cent of Brits are still on a standard tariff - and therefore paying about £300 more per year than they would on the cheapest tariffs. If politicians publicised this fact, they would be doing their constituents a major service."
