'Energy firms discriminating against pensioners'
Energy companies which offer discounted tariffs for customers who pay online or by direct debit are unfairly disadvantaging pensioners, it has been claimed.
According to figures cited by The Times, consumers who pay for their gas and electricity using these methods pay on average £210 less per year than those who opt to pay by cheque.
However, because pensioners are less likely to have an internet connection, they are denied the chance to save money in this way, according to Help the Aged, which is lobbying suppliers for a change in their policies.
It is claimed that up to ten million households are without internet connections are affected.
The new round of criticism of energy companies comes as British Gas, npower and EDF have all recently been excoriated by consumer groups after announcing double-digit price increases for gas and electricity.
The average price increase imposed by the companies stands at 15 per cent.
