'Don't leave cover behind' on learning holidays
Travel insurance is a "particularly important" accompaniment for people looking to take part in so-called 'learning holidays'.
That is the message coming from insurers and travel agents, with STA Travel highlighting the importance of taking out a policy when embarking on trip where you learn a new skill such as cooking or kite-surfing.
The likelihood of an increased cost associated with the skills-based holiday, as well as the potential risk if it involves an extreme sport or physically precarious adventure activity, means that it is particularly important.
A spokesperson from STA explained: "Learning holidays can range from learning Spanish in Ecuador, to kite surfing in Portugal and photography courses in Costa Rica.
"The further you are away from home, or the more secluded your location, the more expensive it would be to repatriate the traveller back to the UK in the case of an accident or illness.
"The quality of medical care is imperative, so it is crucial to ensure your policy includes the cost of private health care or air lift to a country with more sophisticated health service if deemed necessary," she added.
"Adventure activities such as kite-surfing do carry more risk, so it is imperative the passenger is covered for the activity they are taking part in."
A quarter of young travellers embark on their journeys whether uninsured or underinsured, potentially putting those supporting them at risk if they needed medical aid or repatriation.
