Cheap energy deals still available, says finance site
Consumers should not let allegations that energy companies are colluding to fix prices distract them from the good deals on the market, a price comparison site has said.
This week, ScottishPower confirmed it will be increasing its charges for gas and electricity by 15 per cent and 14 per cent respectively.
The firm’s move followed double-digit increases from British Gas, npower and EDF and has prompted the government to announce it is to investigate the firms for alleged price fixing.
However, despite the fact that the price rises mean the majority of the country are paying more for their power, savvy consumers can still find cheaper deals if they are prepared to search the market, Tim Wolfenden, head of home services at uSwitch.com, said.
He commented: "The ongoing debate over competition in the market is for the government and the regulator to get to grips with. The key thing is that consumers must not allow themselves to be distracted from the immediate savings they can make now.
"There are good deals out there now which could shave up to £325 off an annual energy bill - consumers need to be taking action now."
