British homeowners battle with quake aftermath
News that the UK has suffered the biggest earthquake in 25 years has served as a timely reminder for people to make sure they have adequate protection to cover any damage to their property.
The last two years have highlighted the potential for Mother Nature to wreak havoc in the UK, with summer flooding and winter winds causing millions of pounds of damage.
And, while an earthquake is one of the less likely factors to consider, last night's seismic event – which registered 5.2 on the Richter scale, the largest since 1984 – demonstrated that it pays to be prepared.
Lasting ten seconds, the main quake had an epicentre near Market Rasen in Lincolnshire and was felt as far afield as Newcastle, Yorkshire, London, Cumbria, the Midlands, Norfolk and also parts of Wales around 01:00 GMT.
The British Geological Survey confirmed the quake had struck, with many Britons finding themselves dealing with damage to roofs or buildings as result.
Insurance provider Abbey has already reported thousands of claims coming in off the back of the quake, with director Tony Beckwith noting that a "good insurance policy that offers comprehensive protection for your property," would make it a lot easier for people to recover.
"We would advise anyone affected to check their property, contact the relevant utility company or their insurer if they see anything unusual," he added.
