British Gas ignores calls for tariff reductions
British Gas customers have been warned not to expect tariffs to be reduced in the near future despite its improved profits.
The energy giant has today confirmed its annual operating profit increased to £571 million in 2007.
The announcement has prompted outrage from consumer groups following the company's decision earlier this year to raise its tariffs on gas and electricity by 15 per cent.
However, reacting to the criticism the firm's chief executive Sam Laidlaw shrugged off the outcry and warned that because wholesale energy prices remain extremely volatile" its customers should not anticipate a cut to its prices this year.
Ann Robinson, the director of consumer policy for price comparison website uSwitch.com, slammed Mr Laidlaw's justification for the rises and accused the company of "taking its customers for a ride".
She added: "It has come bottom in recent surveys of customer service, yet it has put its prices up and massively increased its profits.
"It is very good at looking after shareholders but not at looking after its customers."
