ABI: Millions of newbuilds facing flood risk'
Government plans to press ahead with newbuild targets could leave many of the homes' owners at risk of flooding, it has been claimed.
According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), around a third of the three million homes set to be constructed by 2020 could be located on a flood plain.
This would put them at increased risk of flooding should a repeat of last summer's deluges occur and could prompt a huge number of home insurance claims in future, Justin Jacobs, director of property, at the ABI claims.
Mr Jacobs said: "In the last year, 13 major developments have been given the go-ahead despite Environment Agency advice on the flood risk.
"Where a local authority plans to ignore flood risk advice, the government should step in and review the proposals and be compelled to publish their decision."
The cost of repairs to homes damaged by the high winds and deluges during the summer is estimated at £3 billion, the ABI has said.
