Shoppers advised to know their refund rights
Returning Christmas presents can be inconvenient due to busy sale periods, but shoppers may benefit from knowing their rights at this time, Halifax has warned.
According to data from the lender, the average amount refunded during January is £60, with this month and December being the most popular for taking unwanted or unsuitable goods back.
However, consumers might be able to minimise stress by understanding that credit card users can gain extra protection on items bought using this method of payment.
Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act dictates that if a retailer will not refund faulty goods, the card company is liable for purchases between £100 and £30,000, explained Ken Stannard, head of credit cards at the bank.
"The busy high street can be a stressful place at this time of year, but with the right knowledge of your shopping rights, you can feel relaxed when returning gifts or sale purchases," he added.
Most shops started their sales on December 26th or 27th, although many people went online on Christmas Day to start checking out bargains.
