Abbey: Protect your home on New Year's Eve
More than three-quarters of UK homeowners said they worried about their property being burgled on New Year's Eve, a personal finance survey revealed today.
According to Abbey Insurance, one in six Britons plan to stay in on December 31st, as they are too scared to leave their home vulnerable to opportunistic thieves.
The high street lender has therefore offered advice to those who do want to socialise but also want to ensure they minimise the chance of having their possessions stolen.
Leaving lights on is a top tip for homeowners, as this can give the impression that the house is occupied.
It is also wise to hide any packaging for expensive or valuable items and make sure all doors and windows are firmly locked.
Using an alarm or similar security system can be useful to alert neighbours should a thief take a chance at looting a property.
"We would encourage people to take precautions this New Year's Eve to deter potential burglars," said Anthony Frost, Abbey's home insurance spokesperson.
Many consumers may find that using finance comparisons on internet sites can be an effective way to achieve the most competitive home insurance price.
