Older homes 'could be better insulated'

Older houses in the UK might be less well insulated than newer builds, one body has suggested today.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, checking that a home has sufficient loft insulation can not only offer valuable help with money, it can also help to improve a household's environmental performance.

Regulations set down in 2006 stipulate that all new homes must have loft insulation that is at least 270 mm thick - but they also warned that older properties may well not have such protection.

Rob Bell, energy doctor with the Energy Saving Trust, added: "If your home is draughty you can draught proof it - if you have old windows you can pick up window sealants and draught proofing strips."

Furthermore, brushes for the letter box and around doors and silicon sealant around skirting boards can help to insulate the home.

Anyone wishing to draught-proof their home might like to consider help with loans as a means of gaining the personal finance boost required for the move.

In 2006 the government laid down the Code for Sustainable Homes that stipulated the insulation requirements of new properties.
