Mobile phone strictures welcomed
The announcement in recent days that drivers using their mobile phones while on the road could face a jail sentence of up to two years has been welcomed by one insurance provider.
Direct Line states that the implementation of stricter penalties should increase public awareness of the problem - hopefully resulting in fewer accidents and less people injured or in need of help with money to effect repairs on their vehicles.
Carmel McCarthy, motor spokesperson at Direct Line, said: "The use of mobile phones whilst driving can be a major distraction and a serious threat to road safety. Direct Line Insurance welcomes any guidelines that promote responsible driving as a positive move."
According to the firm, at any given time as many as one million UK drivers were using their handheld mobile phones, thereby posing a risk to themselves and their fellow road users.
In recent analysis by personal finance provider Sainsbury's Bank, as many as 68 per cent of drivers admitted to dangerous behaviour while driving, including eating and drinking, wearing inappropriate footwear and feeling tired while driving.
