Mixed housing 'is important for communities'
Consumers looking to compare mortgages on new properties in the coming years might like to consider the nature of their surroundings, perhaps taking heed of observations from the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA).
The body states that in order to create successful communities, homes of different sizes and types must be grouped together - a factor which could potentially affect future price and the help with money available on the later sale of the property.
It was responding to a recent survey carried out by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (Cabe) that indicated one-third of people living on new estates believe that they lacked character, while a higher proportion think they are unsafe for children to play in.
Kate Henderson, a spokesperson for the TCPA, said: "We need to create not just houses, but socially-successful communities. You can do that through design and having a mix of tenures."
Other findings of the Cabe survey included the fact that, while 91 per cent of residents were happy with their homes, 40 per cent felt there was not enough public space and 48 per cent would like more play space nearby.
